Alright, from the go, let’s preface this by highlighting that Tungi is the only artist who’s ever received a 10/10 review from us, specifically for his beast of an EP “Life of Sound”. That’s no small feat. No one else has squeezed out a perfect rating from us since then. That said, let’s hop back to “With the Gs”.
This project’s bold. It had to be, it’s a Tungi joint. But is the ballsiness optimally rewarded? Well, not so much. And we’ll unfold that by dissecting the pieces that make up the sum: Take the opener, launching out with ringy percussion, and soon delving into typical boy-waxes-lyrical-about-girl wordplay. It’s all couched against a pretty cool synth-buoyed chorus, beefed up by jolty beats. The main bulk of it would be sufficiently compelling, if not for some mild patchiness in the way of transitioning from verses to main refrain. Even then, it’s our pick for the outstanding track of the project.
The followup “Sunshine” ft Gee is more vibey, starting out with a crowd extract, morphing into the fully fledged piece itself. Lyrically in the same vein as its predecessor, it has a more imposing feel-good approach pumped in for good measure. The number’s further elevated by Ill Gee’s suave bars; inspired pick.
Listening to the tail end of the project made for an interesting experience. Prolific scenester Soundlykbb stepped up onto the support roster to help out on “No Lie”, adding an almost playful (sonic) tenderness to the tune, which could have risked being unremarkable. Then enter the reggae-themed “Kunkoraki”, of which we’ll only do as much as applaud Jerod for some potent singing (save for that J Boog’s “Let’s Do It Again” allusion…bit tacky, no?)
By the end of this four-piece joint, we were appreciative of Tungi’s daring spirit. It doesn’t always give off identical results, but it’s a recipe for gems. Keep digging, G!
