In its fullness, “Mellow” is a fine number. But it doesn’t cross into being exceptional. And yet when dissected & assessed by the parts that make up the whole. Something exciting becomes apparent.
Joka packs a bunch of potentially distinguishing aspects to his artistry. Taken apart, for instance, his unique approach to whipping up a nifty vocal melody is a handy W. So is the thin dry semi-chrooning technique he often pulls as on here. His wordplay is simply sufficient, nothing extraordinary, but that’s ok too. In fact, it’s perfect for the subgenre he plies his trade in. (Moderation is king). Bro’s also got an acumen for image.
Point here is, it would seem that the sum that is this tune should be as thrilling as the elements that make it up. Yet at least from our vantage point, it slightly isn’t. This in no way indicates that it’s underwhelming. But we believe bro could even hit a harder spark with more self awareness, a bit of which he already shows he has. It’d help him be clinical with his arrangements, more precise as to slim down the (artistic) fat, if you will. Enough of the whining on our part though, we did dig the jam, and we’re onto that Joka train. Best believe we’ll be keeping a look on our ninja!
