King’s got quite a varied package here and, as we often do for such cases, we’ll have at this in a clustered format.
First off with the initial impression, the project’s intro somehow manages to be both inviting and kinda too basic. What with the more-tell-than-show opener! But hey, perhaps we’re a bit uptight there, after all not everything has to have some layered mystical touch to it. In any case, it’s not a fully fledged piece in a technical sense, so we’re good.
In terms of standouts, our fav track on the project just had to be “Running on the Edge. It just also happened to house our pick for coolest addition to the support roster, Nelsa, whose floaty cosmic-coded vocals buoyed the tune into a rather cinematic direction. Main man’s own echoey chill bars only served to suave it up all the more above the anthemic percussive carpet that percolated underneath the tune.
On another prominent point, the team back here all attested to UNiTY Originaal being the outstanding discovery on the project. Bro’s mildly rugged dancehall-esque sonic acumen & conspicuously light pipes lit up both tunes he featured on; “Bleeding” and “Sticks & Stones”.
The album’s middle bulk showcases the trait we were most psyched about; significant yet coherent variation within the spectrum of lyrical concepts all the way to the end. We’ve chanced upon a bunch of really cool joints soundwise, this year. But most of them have been solely of the typical girl-boy-delight-of-senses yearning variety, lyrically, from opener to closer. We rolled with it, but secretly craved more. Well, here we have the “more”; from career trajectory musings to existential angst, all couched in Kavali King’s ice-cold yet strangely relatable poise.
It’s all neatly sealed in the closer, on which he does well not to deploy an extra from the support roster, but deliver a typical template emblematic of what’s preceded it up to that point. Ngl, we’re sold, and we’ll have our eyes peeled for any future cheffing from bro’s sneaky arsenal!
