Luke’s onto something good here. And there’s signs to show for it. For one, his signature sound is still nailed down as on his last output. Plus, his features gelled quite naturally with the project. Theoretically, there should be sparks here, there’s all it takes to crack that. Now it shouldn’t be necessary for us to preface our next statement, and yet by experience it is, so here goes; Our take is as subjective as any. It’s not some infallible verdict. That out of the way, there’s a mild dryness, a slight blandness if you will, about the sum of the parts.
Speculation never yields much, but we’re willing to bet he had some more adventurous material that was pruned in pursuit of a safer final version. But enough of that. Here’s some highs on the EP. Our pick for favorite track is “Saborcito”. Just ’cause it diverges from the same-ness of its predecessors, much to the credit of Mexican-Columbian songstress Mila Engred, who adds a tender sensuality to the number & even influences Luke to wield a different approach in bid for complementarity.
In the same vein, we’d grant a nod to A Pass as the most moving support feature on the project. He beefed up “Still Searching” with a satisfying main refrain & memorable verses. The team back here often joke about his voice sounding permanently altered, but hey if it works, it works. We digress. Luke stepped up to with more moving bars, getting all meta about his artistic trajectory and successes to-date. It was a fitting closer to an earnest effort, whose only flaw is playing it too safe. That’s not to say the whole is short of commendable. ’Cause it isn’t. Vibe on, Luke, cook on!
