Strange tension that is this joint! On the one hand, it feels grave, dense if you will. Like, there’s a conceptual heaviness to it, which shouldn’t be surprising given its introspective undertones. Yet in the same breath, from an executional angle, it’s bare. Not detrimentally so. In fact, the thinness of it all is an asset: A disjointedly jolty & clinky percussive carpet and a melodically minimalistic progression (for a background) gel aptly to make for a pleasantly quirky number.
It’s quite fitting that there’s no main refrain or choral phase in the tune’s structure. It’s bold but it pays off in how ‘human’ the result is. There you have Tai Dai, an artist ripe with influences both from her diverse heritage & previous creative synergies, dealing out bars in a raw almost-wearied tone about her life, aspirations, inner tensions & in-betweens. And all this wealth of factors culminates into quite the sonic aura.
For a while, we’ve had quite a bit to say about Tai Dai’s artistry, and we’ll soon have a full artist spotlight piece about her, which is interestingly slated to serve multiple purposes, as y’all will peep. But for now, we’re sold on the newest number. Nifty!
