Mukama wange as my witness *allusion*, this joint’s a breath of fresh air. From a purely recreational point of view, the most enjoyable of its subgenre so far this year. So, why not a full scale? More on that later. But for now, let’s take a moment to bask in the aptly sculpted emblems of suburbia, Agent Mgumbe’s producer chops, and our main man’s sense of moderation.

It’d be quite the omission not to point out that all, save one track, on here are under two minutes. Brief motifs, of which the most preferred by the team back here was “Naguru’s Peak”. Jam fittingly cracks open with an audio excerpt from a deceased folksy pop truth teller whom Kampalans would be very familiar with, and proceeds into an existential sort of stock taking of the experience that is Ugandanness. Ripe with civil contradictions, ramifications of corruption and the weight of maintaining a vocational drive in practically uninspiring circumstances, main man’s quite the smith for not letting the number sink into conceptual dragginess or pretentious territory.

Still on residential references as titles, “Luthuli Rise” stands out as the only tune premised around a chorus. Nothing sublime, matter o’fact, the self-referential sacred allusion in the refrain borders on vainglorious tackiness, if not saved by its sheer catchiness. And it’s the poppiness that makes for a relief in the thick of the project’s conceptual gravity.

There’s something to be said about Kalibwani’s self awareness. Vitally on here, but for the initiated elsewhere too. For one, he acknowledges the project’s brevity on the closer. Contextually, it would appear the reference is to the tune itself. But in a meta sense, it’s no coincidence the concession is at the EP’s close. The team back here felt the project could have been suaver in a more expansive format, and main man’s got the sauce for it. But heck, this was quite the listen, and hearts are warm.
