Last month was a rather eventful one in terms of artistic output, commentary, and innovative event concepts on the scene. It’s from the vantage point of the latter that we thought it cool to highlight a neat conceptual collab that happened last month: Tastemaking outfits Xpressions Ug & Pineapple Undertones joined forces to profile, reinterpret and celebrate the trajectory of Ugandan music. And they set out to do so from a retrospective, present & future standpoint.
In way of profiling, they cheffed up a spotlighting series drawing attention to a trio of new school scenesters.
The profile series also highlighted influential collectives among the current crop.
And it was all crowned by spotlighting legendary old school saxophonist Moses Matovu and, by extension, the acts he’s been part of over the years.
Up for the serve was also a nifty playlist dubbed “62.0 CRANE FM”, featuring a wider curation of present musical acts & classics.
In terms of reinterpretation, they had a go at reframing musical output from back in the day, into the current context. This was mainly via covers by a select group of artists from the current wave. The feat had Afro R&B artist Kohen Jaycee belting out a suaver version of “Sweet Lady” by groundbreaking late 2000’s duo Radio & Weasel.
In the same vein, scene debutante Vini Mercy had a go at one of the duo’s hits “Dudu”
The project additionally featured a mashup of “Pombeizer” by Zagazillions ft Mark Mick and “Potential” by the Goodlyfe crew
We love to see a concept executed aptly, and had a hoot of a time following the project. Here’s to more intricately themed explorations of the scene! Kudos to Xpressions Ug & Pineapple Undertones; mean sauce!
