A sustained lo-fi cassette ribbon jam effect opens this 5-track joint. In a rather poetic sense, it’s a fitting thematic preview of what’s to come later on the project: a paradoxical array of braggy yearning, bare-yet-layered tunes, strangely coated in chest-thumping vulnerability.
“WHET” obviously didn’t materialize from a vacuum. In terms of multi-track projects, it was preceded by a trio-helmed joint EP two years prior. We had a lot to say about it, and it’s traceable in our EP reviews section. But back to the subject at hand, on the current joint Tai Dai centers her signature sensibilities and only permits two entries onto the support cast, Lukorito and MAUIMØON. The picks make sonic and relational sense, same circles type stuff. Of the two, MAUIMØON was the fav of the team back here. On the EP’s only track that exceeds two minutes “Where U Go”, bro struck up a dreamy melange of croons and doo-wopesque harmonies with oddly apt translucent enunciation, that cast a pleasantly chill contrast to the most agile percussive carpet of any of the numbers on here.
From a thematic view point, there’s a self-awareness about constant overtones of yearning, balanced by the rapper’s tonally less sentimental delivery. This approach keeps the longing shtick from getting tired, but it’s also helped that she affords the dynamic an unmissable nod à la “don’t you dare call me needy!” On the thematic coherence front, sublime! Though, can’t help but suspect the whole joint could have used some more conceptual diversity.
In the same vein, delightful as the jolty beats, trippy time signatures & sound corridors, and playful sing-talking might be, it’s not necessarily a new template for homegirl over here. And if considered as part of an on-going trajectory, it’s not much removed from being a plateau in Tai Dai’s recent entries. But that’s more of a zoomed out panoramic vantage point. In and of itself, this is a superb joint, and we can’t wait to bask in more of what’s coming next after this!
